Apple officially unveiled the fifth generation of its iPad Air tablet at the “Peek Performance” keynote. What changes have been made? We make an inventory.
The fifth-generation iPad Air was one of the eagerly anticipated products at Apple’s keynote earlier this year. There was also talk of a new Alpine Green color for the iPhone 13 and a brand new cheap 5G iPhone SE, not to mention the new Apple M1 Ultra chip, the Apple Mac Studio (a powerful Mac Mini) and the impressive 5K Studio Playback.
This iPad Air (2022) takes over the main aesthetic codes of its predecessor: flat edges, homogeneous and clearly visible edges, slightly rounded corners. At this point, Apple is playing it conservatively and not disturbing the look of its product, which had undergone a major retouch between the 3rd and 4th generations.
The M1 chip in control
Where the apple brand bumps up and ups its game is in terms of performance. In October 2022, the iPad Air relied on the A14 Bionic chip. We could logically have expected the A15 Bionic, which powers the iPhone 13, to take over. Except not: Apple goes way beyond that.
The iPad Air (2022) indeed tastes the Apple M1 chip, based on an ARM architecture and engraved in 5 mm. It can be found in particular on the MacBook Air 2020, 13-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini, but also on the 24-inch iPad Pro and iMac 2021. In terms of power, there is a real gap. Apple promises faster raw and graphics performance to make it even more competitive. Resource-intensive software (Lightroom), real-time AI, 3D games: nothing can resist.
Regarding this performance aspect, we can of course question the interest of the iPad Pro, which stood out mainly for its power. Perhaps Apple will introduce a new generation Pro this fall, this time with the Apple M2 chip.
On the new side, note the arrival of a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle front camera that supports the “Centered Frame” function, which adapts the camera to your movements. A way to always have you in view during a video conference or video call with friends or family.
From 5G to the rendezvous
Until then, only the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (5th generation), 11-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation), iPad (9th generation) and iPad mini (6th generation) were entitled to it.
There is also talk of WiFi and mobile models. In addition, 5G will be needed to improve the connectivity of the device. The multinational also mentioned a more efficient and faster USB-C port for transferring videos and videos. The iPad Air (2022) is finally compatible with the Smart Keyboard Folio and Magic Keyboard accessories.
Other than that, Apple hasn’t given any other tech specs, but it’s a safe bet the features won’t change much. So we should find a 10.9-inch LCD screen with a definition of 2360 x 1640 pixels or even stereo speakers.
Apple iPad Air (2022): price and availability
Nothing changes on the storage side: 64 or 256 GB For pop color lovers, you should be happy: the iPad Air (2022) lands in space gray, starlight, pink, purple and blue.
