Great stories always end one day. This is what will happen at the end of the year between WRT and Audi Sport, the Belgian team led by Vincent Vosse and Yves Weerts preparing to end the partnership with the manufacturer from Ingolstadt (Germany) .
🇬🇧 The end of the story between WRT and Audi Sport!
The love story between WRT and Audi has continued since the team’s international debut in 2011. A page is turned for Baudour’s team, which has won nearly 50 titles with the German manufacturer. There are still a few to go with the GT World Challenge Europe crowns.
So we will have to get used to it, we will not see WRT in Audi next season. Audi’s unobtrusive withdrawal from the Hypercar program (which goes way beyond customer service) has undoubtedly weighed on the balance sheet.
By founding WRT in 2009, Yves Weerts, Vincent Vosse and René Verbist (who left the structure) immediately joined the Volkswagen Group by acquiring Volkswagen Scirocco in 2009. At the end of the same year, WRT took over three R8 LMS to drive in Belcar, FFSA GT and the 24 Hours of Spa. The mayonnaise between the manufacturer and the team from Baudour lasts very quickly.
WRT’s international career at Audi developed in 2011 with the FIA GT3 and the brand new Blancpain Endurance Series Championship. WRT already won the 2011 24 Hours of Spa under the Audi Sport Team WRT banner, and the sequel was a success all over the world. Organized around Elliot Hoffet and Kurt Mollekens, the GT program can also count on the colossal experience of Pierre Dieudonné and Thierry Tassin, without forgetting Sébastien Viger and Maxime Bonnefoy.
“This is a very special and emotional moment for all of us at Team WRT and for me personally as we announce that an important chapter in the history of our organization will soon end and a new one will begin, recognizes Vincent Vosse. It can’t be otherwise, because Audi is the brand we have been associated with since Team WRT was founded at the end of 2009 and our only partner in GT3.
I remember very well the mutual excitement of the first contacts, which were facilitated by the Belgian Audi Club and our friend JG Mal-Voy, who is still in our hearts. From there began a fantastic journey. A fantastic journey, not only because of the many successes, but also because of the excellent cooperation and the common philosophy of excellence and innovation, always looking to the future.
Along the way we made so many good friends and shared so many tires and enjoyed ourselves in all conditions, good and not so good. There are so many people we want to thank that it’s impossible to do that here. by dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, Werner Frowein, Dieter Gass, Rolf Michl or also Romolo Liebchen, Chris Reinke or Siegfried Krause, we really want to express our appreciation and thanks to everyone who has been involved in the joint programs over the past thirteen years. All things in life have a beginning and an end and our paths will now part, but the long-lasting friendships will remain. We can all be proud of what has been achieved together and we will all cherish the many fond memories of this great time.”
And Chris Reinke, head of Audi Sport customer racing, continues: “After 13 fantastic years, we will go our own way from 2023, but we will continue to maintain friendly ties. The close relationship with Vincent Vosse, but also with Yves and Pascal Weerts is characterized by deep trust, sporting values and an absolute desire for success. A big thank you to them and their entire team, along with our best wishes for the future.”
With Audi, WRT has won everything: 24 Hours of Spa, 24 Hours of Nürburgring, 12 Hours of Bathurst, 10 Hours of Suzuka, etc…
What is the future of WRT in GT? To date, nothing has been formalized, but you don’t have to guess to understand that WRT will get closer to the brand it will drive in Hypercar. Coming soon…
