our first impressions on board the large, luxurious and sporty SUV

Second best-selling Land Rover after the Evoque in our territory, the Range Rover Sport has just been renewed. Not to upset a fairly conservative clientele, the 2022 vintage is evolving sparingly. Outwardly, it is easily recognizable: resolute Land Rover square and muscular silhouette, floating roof, tapered lights, high and horizontal bonnet, slightly rounded nose and honeycomb grille at the front, the fundamentals do not change. Il n’empêche que, plus long de 6.7 cm (4.95 m) que son prédécesseur, pas plus haut mais un peu moins large (de 2.5 cm, 2.05 m), il se veut plus dynamique que never. There are fewer edges, the surfaces are more polished, the line is generally smoother, an effect enhanced by the door handles now lying flat. Finally, at the back, it moves a little more with tapered lights integrated into a black lacquered headband placed horizontally. And it is also from this angle that we distinguish it most from its big brother the “very short” Range Rover, whose headlights form a right angle and go to the bottom of the tailgate. More “compact”, sportier and “accessible” than the latter, we still expect the Range Rover Sport to have good reception qualities and a high standing level, but is this the case?

Always so generous

Not only has the Range Rover Sport grown, but the wheelbase has also increased by 8cm, benefiting both legroom and boot space, which have increased by 2cm and 74dm3 (647dm3) respectively. He was already known for being generous, he is even more so. Up front, space is generous and it’s easy to find a good seating position thanks to multiple adjustments and wide amplitudes. If the British SUV dominates the road, the cockpit effect is there with seats set quite low, a dashboard and a center console lifted to the max to feel like in a cocoon. There are plenty of well thought-out storage spaces, such as the particularly deep center armrest with double bottom.

In the back, the space is generous, it is easy to stretch the legs. But the sofa is designed more for 2. The middle seat is narrower, harder, a great classic, it can help every now and then. Oh, last point. don’t wait for a 7-seater variant, as was the case with the old version, only the “normal” Range now (and this is new to him) benefits from such a combination.

We are logically very well settled aboard the long Range Rover Sport (almost 5 m long). The middle passenger won’t have it as good, but we’ve seen worse.© Hugo Dupont

Great luxury on board

In a Range Rover Sport it is not only the space that counts, but also the standing level. And on this point too, the newcomer lives up to the brand’s reputation. On the Autobiography version, it’s even luxurious. Soft leather, thick carpets, rare plastics and high-quality assemblies, it has it all. That’s lucky considering the price of the plug-in hybrid model in which we were able to install shown € 140,100… excluding options! But don’t worry, even low finishes can hardly pass for “basic” versions. They are also not given, that said, the Range Rover Sport 2022 entry-level price from € 94,200, excluding CO2 fines and the weight… that all thermal models will suffer (6-cylinder diesel of 250 and 350 hp and V8 Twin Turbo petrol 530 hp) without exception. On the other hand, with their large 38.2 kWh battery that allows good autonomy on paper (more than 100 km), rechargeable hybrids escape it. It remains only to check if the behavior is more dynamic than that of its big brother and it will have checked all the boxes to reconnect with the success of its predecessor. See you in a few months!

The presentation is worthy of the brand. The assemblies are very neat and the materials, especially on this high Autobiography livery, fly high. The ergonomics have been well thought out.
