Slowe, the Parisian gym where you take the time

“Harder better faster stronger”, the motto is engraved on the walls… To go faster, you also have to take your time. Recently arriving in the landscape of Parisian sports halls, Slowe Wellness House is a home of the new generation. With its bright space, its appearance of a large loft, its scraped walls, its bar and its large bay windows, the address, located in the heart of the most gentrified district of Paris, is a funny place with three heads that combines practical sports , alternative medicine and coffee shop.

It must be said that the sports halls have revolutionized in recent years and “gym shops” have sprung up all over Paris. Understand: people-sized clubs with pricing per session according to the ‘pay as you go’ principle, a trend from the United States. At the heart of the Slowe project is one observation: “the gym is often a dehumanized place where people meet but don’t mix, almost ignore each other”says Étienne Penhouët, one of the co-founders.

“Our approach is to make people come back to a place where they feel at home. † And for that they have created an authentic coffee shop. “People talk to each other, it brings conviviality back, a bit like a counter”continues the former head of partnerships at Carlsberg at music festivals, because “this large bright loft is a chance to take care of yourself before going back to your routine”

His partner Mathieu Magaud was in finance at the rating agency Standard & Poor’s. “He does a lot of sports in the studio and I preferred to practice in the climbing room, it’s a place of life”, continues Penhouet. Together they formed the identity of their room, the fruit of a long reflection but also of setbacks.

In November 2019, they visited a property at 30, rue d’Enghien, in the Xand district, on March 18, 2020, they must sign as the Covid and incarceration diminish their momentum. The affair will not be concluded until November 2020. But for the inauguration of Slowe, you will have to wait until June 9, 2021 and the reopening of the sports halls. A typical day starts at 7:30am with first classes at 7:45am.

“The room is often a place where people meet but don’t rub”

Etienne Penhouët, co-founder of Slowe

In concrete terms, two rooms, two atmospheres, with yoga and Pilates classes on one side and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) on the other. These sessions consist of about ten people and bring together mostly women (they are 10% men in yoga classes, 30 in HIIT classes). When the morning classes are over, the coffee shop is in full swing. There are agreements between the two with therapists: naturopathic doctor, reflexologist, osteopath or astrotherapist…

“We even launched a coworking and sports formula. The idea is to come and work in the cafe with unlimited hot drinks and the option to include a gym class in the day. † Lattes, cappuccinos… rare are the rooms that offer such a sophisticated coffee shop offering. In order not to grind a little black between the two incarcerations, Étienne trained as a barista at the Caféothèque, a large Parisian coffee roaster.

The house offers specialty coffees such as Chitul Tirol from Guatemala, from the Caféothèque, which develops beautiful peppery notes on extraction. The coffee shop also offers excellent freshly squeezed organic juice bars: detox (celery, apple, cucumber), antioxidant (beetroot, apple, carrot) and vitamin (orange, carrot, lemon)…

To link sports with nutrition and recovery, Slowe also serves homemade energy balls, a protein smoothie with hemp vegetable protein and CBD matcha that helps to relax the muscles after exercise. The next step ? Thicken the food offerings with savory, from brunch to take-out… Eating better also makes you stronger.
