Zapping Autonews Green Choice of 5 electric city cars for 2022

Barely revealed, the Ferrari 296 GTS is entitled to its special series. This convertible variant of the Ferrari 296 GTB plug-in hybrid is available with a pack called Assetto Fiorano, which makes it even more extreme. This equipment package is aimed at customers of the brand “who want to get the most out of the car’s power and performance”.

Visually, this 296 GTS Assetto Fiorano has a livery inspired by the Ferrari 260 LM. The red color of the body is contrasted by a gray pattern that covers part of the hood, bumper or even the rear. Like the 296 GTS, this special version is equipped with a folding hardtop, which can be removed while driving up to 45 km/h. Once retracted, this roof is stored in the rear hood.

In addition to this exclusive look, the Ferrari 296 GTS Assetto Fiorano features adjustable Multimatic shock absorbers designed for track use. The front bumper features “carbon fiber appendages” that are “capable of producing an additional 10 kilograms of downforce,” according to the Maranello firm.

Carbon fiber galore to reduce weight

The cabin and exterior are also partially designed in carbon fiber to accommodate the weight gain of the supercar. Indeed, the car is necessarily heavier than the 296 GTB due to its sliding roof system. Ferrari explains that it has mainly reworked the door panels, in order to gain another eight kilos. And to stay on the road even better than the base 296 GTS, this Assetto Fiorano version is fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R racing tires.

The plug-in hybrid engine will not undergo any changes

Under the hood, no changes have been made to the 3.0 V6 engine that powers the 296 GTS. Associated with an electric block, it still develops 830 Ch for 740 Nm of torque. It enables the supercar to reach a top speed of over 330 km/h and go from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. The Ferrari 296 GTS Assetto Fiorano finally takes 7.6 seconds to go from 0 to 200 km/h. Thanks to a rechargeable battery of 7.45 kWh, the car can travel 25 kilometers in 100% electric mode.

As with the base 296 GTS, this Assetto Fiorano version has no release date or official price at this time. Due to its more extreme character, it will certainly be more expensive than the standard 296 GTS.

In brief

If the new 296 GTS isn’t exclusive enough for you, Ferrari has a solution. The prancing horse brand refuses its findable supercar in a special series called Assetto Fiorano. The target ? Make the car even more extreme and offer it some equipment – such as adjustable shock absorbers, racing tires or carbon fiber elements – especially for driving on the track. The 830 hp 3.0 V6 engine will not undergo any changes. Thanks to the 7.45 kWh rechargeable battery, you can still drive faster than 330 km/h, accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and drive 25 kilometers electrically.
