The best of sports in Aachen

From Friday 24 June to 3 July, the mythical CHIO of Aix-la-Chapelle in Germany will take place. Five disciplines will be represented: jumping, dressage, eventing, four-man drivers and aerobatics.

Aachen will be a real horse capital from tomorrow and for ten days, where riders, jumpers and drivers are welcome among the best in the world. A program par excellence for enthusiasts but also for amateurs, who will undoubtedly be massively present, with about 350,000 spectators expected for a “unique atmosphere in the world” as the German dressage rider Isabell Werth put it. A total of 330 riders from 32 countries will be present, with 967 horses for 98 hours of sport! Figures that make you dizzy, just like the riders involved.

In show jumping, sixteen of the top twenty in the world will come to the stadium, such as the world’s number 1 Martin Fuchs from Switzerland, the British Olympic gold medalist Ben Maher and the German Daniel Deusser, who will try to win his title in the Rolex Grand Price to keep. Among our French, Roger-Yves Bost, Nicolas Delmotte, Pierre-Marie Friant, Mégane Moissonnier and Kévin Staut will make the journey. And don’t forget the Youth Equestrian Games, where we are represented by Jeanne Hirel!

In dressage, the crème de la crème will also be found in Germany. We can count on local Isabell Werth, record holder in the Deutsche Bank Prize, the Sunday Freestyle Grand Prix, but who considers the Danish Cathrine Dufour (world number 2) to be the big favourite. A major competition accentuated by the presence of the Swedes Patrik Kittel, Antonia and Juliette Ramel, the Briton Charlotte Fry or another incredible German rider, Ingrid Klimke, who is not only part of the dressage team, but also part of the team for the event testing. This week is also the scene of the farewell ceremony of Bella Rose, Isabell Werth’s mare, during the opening ceremony on June 28.

In eventing there is also a fine line-up of stars: the German Olympic gold medalist Julia Krajewski, world champion Rosalind Canter (GBR), but also the Australian Andrew Hoy, the German Michael Jung, Tim and Jonelle Price (NZL) or even the British William Fox-Pitt, Tom McEwen and Sarah Bullimore. For France, the team consists of Luc Château, Stéphane Landois, Camille Lejeune, Gaspard Maksud. Benjamin Massié will be present as an individual.

In driving, our leaders Benjamin Aillaud, Anthony Hordé and Sébastien Vincent will have a hard time with big names such as the Australian Boyd Exell or the Dutchman Bram Chardon. In aerobatics, our eyes will of course be on our three talented acrobats: Manon Moutinho, Lambert Leclezio and Théo Gardies.

Different challenges and themes

Stefanie Peters, president of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein eV (ALRV), organizer of the event, is looking forward to this ten-day competition. † We are very excited to finally be able to relive with the public a CHIO of Aix la Chapelle, as we all know and love it. To maintain and strengthen the position of the CHIO, the organizers face a number of major challenges. Among the themes most important to the organizers for the future, we find the development of the engagement of the young generation and the integration of disabled sporting events. For several years now, the CHIO of Aix la Chapelle has been developing its digital component. This year, for example, there is a new conference format, based on data collected by the SAP, in the disciplines of show jumping, dressage and eventing. A carbon footprint calculator is integrated into the CHIO Aachen app and Web 3.0 technology has made its debut for the new edition of the event. In addition to the competition, the congress “#neuland” will take place in Aachen, where approximately 100 prominent speakers will speak about the most pressing current themes, such as digitization and connected mobility. The central theme of the second day: sport, in which sustainability and equal opportunities are central.

Of course, for this equestrian sporting event, a stallholder village and various activities are on the program. An event not to be missed. Get your ticket HERE via the ticket office.
