In its official speech, Yamaha claims more speed, more efficiency, more sportiness. Always faster which, if you look closely, is almost the opposite of the current trend, in a world where everything is slowing down and where speed has become sacrilege. Transgressively, the XSRs are destined to get faster from generation to generation. More efficient too. As the slogan dear to the “Faster Son” family suggests, which claims the superiority of the new models over their predecessors. And as always, this comes with a set of Yard Built parts to customize a solid foundation.

More than 60,000 Heritage sports models have been sold since 2013, including 125cc. This shows the hope Yamaha has placed in this new version of the XSR 900. If you thought this was the way to ride calm, cool and grandpa style, go ahead, the ancestor is supersonic. An XSR is like any other bike, it has the same performance, but you think you’re going slower because it’s not dressed the same… Go ahead. In addition, the new XSR has become a distant evocation of the GP 500 of the 1980s where the one that preceded it was still searching for its identity and looked more like a garage than a repairman.

Color already, for which you pay no more than black (and that’s a nice touch), is a desire to recall the past. Also the rear part of the bike. The saddle in particular, made like the shell of the race XSR, poly sport style! Ahhh accooooooooo! It takes the lines of a racing bike that most of you don’t know, without going to the end of the concept: the front is missing… There’s the idea, okay, but the analogy stopped along the way, the front fairing disappeared. It’s a shame, given the visual potential of the Somewhere concept, we can find that it lacks a few, even if the beautiful seamless frame alone is a beautiful piece that is particularly highlighted. But what do you want, sports cars are no longer sold.

So, the Delta Box frame dear to the brand, we show it and we remind you that it comes out of the race. As we are told during the presentation of the bike “to celebrate and not to hide”. Reason why we show so many or better said marketing concerns. Whatever happens, the element is 2.3 kg lighter than the previous model, while the engine is tilted 2° further back. Something to change the situation if we are to believe the engineers. Euro 5 and soon compatible with the A2 driver’s license, here’s a formula that is interesting to say the least. Especially since the contents of the tank have also been revised upwards, with 15 liters now consumption against 14 earlier.

It’s a shame not to have offered a streamlined motorcycle at the same time as the Triumph Speed ​​Triple 1200 RR would have found quite a challenge there and neo-retro sports cars don’t exist yet, though they certainly would have a future if we dared take them out. But no, the steering wheel is classic, even if the driving triangle is becoming sportier than before. Indeed, the pendant is 14mm further forward and 35mm lower, which carries more at the front. You wanted comfort? You have sports. There remains the option of reversing the direction of the saddles to bring the handlebars forward 9mm and raise it by 4mm. Always exercise.

And the driver’s seat is either a torture device or an evocation of the foam to be placed on the racing polys, but whatever happens, it’s stiff as justice. We’re talking about it again because even with more pronounced struts and a slightly more typical or even outright tilted stance (the feet are placed 2mm lower and moved 7mm back from the replaced model and they can still be raised 14mm and slide them 4 mm back), we undergo the shape of the seat (did you notice that it is separate from the tank?).

Add a 39mm shorter fork with the same stroke and we understand the emphasis has been placed on the front axle, which benefits from new radial-position calipers. These 4-piston pickups are still reminiscent of Yamaha’s, but they’re lighter and frankly very original. We especially appreciate that the brake chain starts with a Brembo master cylinder with an adjustable lever in spacing. Good sensations and precision guaranteed. Whoever says more placement on the front also says more sensations in the hands and a more direct and precise feedback.

Quickly appreciate the lighter 700g rims thanks to the new Yamaha patented manufacturing method to reduce the thickness of aluminum without losing any quality or stiffness. This also results in a deduction of the inertial force acting on the rear of the motorcycle. Actually ? A lighter “butt” saves a lot of maneuverability, but also the effort needed to place the whole. And since it is a matter of weight, know that even if many elements are lightened and even if the accumulation of the lost weight seems very important, in the end it is only 2 kg that is missing from the last call, to bring the 193 kg of mass of the XSR in running order with a full tank, ie 177 kg dry.

The general formula is none other than that of a state-of-the-art MT 09, with a small piece of Tracer 900 of the same generation: the swingarm. A longer element of 60 mm (compared to that of the MT) and thus slightly less nervousness in theory and more stability if we are to believe the experience and the claims of the brand. Not to mention a wheelbase that has increased by 55 mm, while the castor wheel angle has decreased by 0.4 degrees.

Therefore, changes (or rather mix) have been made to the CP3 platform for 2022. Relaxed in theory, more pleasant than the MT, however, the XSR has been radicalized, adopting a new version of the famous three-cylinder called CP3. The increase in engine power is obtained by increasing the stroke of the forged pistons by 3 mm, bringing the gain to 42 cm3. Above all, Yamaha shows gains in torque and more power at all levels. Logical, but again, we note that it is interesting to say the least to get closer to 900 cm3… The engine modifications are accompanied by a weight change in the gearbox that should bring a better feeling and clearer passages. Noise level, we take the stereophonic pot already discovered on the MT-09. The gases are directed downwards and on each side, but this time the air box does not benefit from a return of sound through the gills of the false tank. On the other hand, the weight gain is again significant with 1.4 kg less on the scale.

The electronic package of the MT 09 has been very logically taken over by the XSR, which therefore adopts the 6-axis inertial unit that allows to play on the TCS traction control, the slide control, the front wheel lift control SCS LIF and on the ‘ABS , which operates on the corner. We’ve aligned all modes: there are 4 levels of customization for each, via the mode button on the left lever or by configuration pressed in the menu accessible through instrumentation. The levels have been clarified: the higher the number, the less nervous or reactive it is. Anti-slip also benefits from deactivation when stationary, while APSG (also known as ride by wire) allows you to quickly choose between levels of responsiveness under acceleration and power distribution (D mode), without forgetting that of traction control via the on/off downward toggle switch implemented on the left lever and a button that allows you to toggle between the two parameters.

This shortcut isn’t always accurate when driving and couldn’t be more practical. It avoids the use of the knurled wheel of the right commodo, which intervenes in more detail in the configuration of the motorcycle and the display. This makes it possible to configure your own driving mode and intervention levels. This configuration is always called up from the left handlebar by selecting mode M. The small screen, which offers no protection against micro-scratches (protective film recommended), gives access to all the usual information and travel information. Properly oriented, it remains legible even in direct sunlight. This is a common element of the new MT family that we know.

New to the XSR is the application of a user-friendly cruise control, as well as an up- and down-shift mechanism. This indicates succinctly and microscopically on the dashboard that we are in a range usable with the left foot. Not only sporty, the XSR also wants to be a roadster, and probably roadster… What a funny mix of genres. Could it be a bit schizophrenic and paradoxical, this XSR? In any case, she shows a certain versatility, but has not forgotten that she is not perfect, as we will see. Minor adjustment of the mirrors at the end of the handlebar, a very high quality element, perfectly designed, vibration free, offers a clear view, but massive and much less discreet than the folding passenger footrests and particularly aesthetic due to lack of offers a low position for the feet. Another disadvantage of the mirrors mentioned: the large width that cannot be reduced: the ball joint does not allow the mirror to move. The file lift also promises to be (a bit) sporty.

The boots are installed without any problems at a height of 810 mm and can be easily placed on the ground, taking advantage of the 20 mm less compared to the old version. Keeping in mind the sentence fell away during the presentation of the bike: “How do you combine a nostalgic dream around the motorcycle?“, here we are ready to go by road. Finally through the path that leads us through a small part of the beautiful Tuscany. In the head the word “dream” spins, the word is released, the concept too.
